RAM
RAM is your computer’s short term memory, it stores everything that’s being done on your computer at this moment. Years ago, you didn’t need more than a couple megs, but today, the bare minimum to even run windows smoothly is around 64MB. If you want to run more high end stuff, you’ll need 128MB, and for gaming or media creation, you’ll want around 256MB of RAM.
Hard Drive
How much Hard Drive do you really need? Well, you’ll probably want to start at forty gigs. From there, it depends on what you’re doing. If you’re a writer, forty gigs is more than enough. If you’re a gamer or a multimedia type, start at eighty. This way you won’t have to worry about deleting old projects and games to make room for new ones.
Selecting a Graphics Card
For a gamer, don’t settle for anything less than the NVIDIA GeForce series. If you’re into media creation, GeForce will do, but a Quadro will really blow you away. For everyone else, a cheap, basic graphics card that just gets the job done is all you need.
